We care deeply about the state of the world’s energy production and know that hydropower is the only 24/7 reliable solution. Gravity is free, and the water always flows. We want to use this endeavor to not only produce clean and green energy, but to establish educational opportunities for young people curious about how society was powered in the late 19th century. The technology is not new, and is incredibly reliable.
In a world moving so rapidly into the future, we believe it’s essential to remember, preserve, and learn from our past. By restoring the historic mills and structures scattered across our beautiful state, we aim to reconnect our communities with our shared industrial heritage
Historically Appropriate Restorations: We commit to carry out historically appropriate restorations of mills and various other structures that form a vital part of our shared heritage. These projects are made possible through the generosity of charitable donations and the support of public grants. In certain cases, we facilitate land trusts for current owners, enabling them to retain ownership while we take responsibility for writing grant applications to secure the necessary funding.
Revitalizing Traditional Flour and Grain Processing: We aim to bring the traditional art of flour and grain processing back on line. By doing so, we aspire to revive not only these historical methods, but also their cultural and economic significance.
Sustainable Energy Generation: Where possible, we plan to reinstate hydropower production by leveraging the natural energy of adjacent waterways, allowing these restored mills to be 100% sustainable. We understand the importance of reliable and sustainable energy, and the potential of hydropower as a 24/7 solution. Gravity is free, and the water always flows.
Alternative Energy Solutions: For mills not located near waterways, we intend to use biodiesel power to run the stones and rollers. By doing so, we ensure the continuation of traditional processes while staying environmentally responsible.
At the heart of our mission lies a deep care for the state of the world’s energy production and a vision for a sustainable future. By revitalizing these historic mills, we not only aim to produce clean, green energy but also to provide an enriching, educational experience.
These mills offer a glimpse into how society was powered in the late 19th century, using technology that is not only reliable but also sustainable. Through this endeavor, we hope to inspire a new generation of Pennsylvanians who are not just curious about our past, but also driven to create a sustainable future.
Join us in this journey of preservation, education, and sustainability as we work towards a future that honors our past, cherishes our present, and cares for our tomorrow.
Imagine the sight of historic mills standing tall, their wheels turning once again, powered by the steady flow of Pennsylvania’s rivers or the clean burn of biodiesel. Picture these iconic structures not just as monuments of the past but as active, sustainable power generators and living classrooms that connect us to our shared heritage. This is our vision at the Pennsylvania Mills Preservation Society – but we can’t make it a reality without your support.
Your generous donation will not only help us restore and maintain these invaluable structures, but it will also help us bring back traditional grain and flour processing methods and harness sustainable energy sources like hydropower and biodiesel. But more than that, it will help us inspire the next generation to understand and appreciate the blend of history, technology, and sustainability these mills represent.
Join us in our mission. Your contribution will ensure that Pennsylvania’s historic mills continue to enrich our landscape, communities, and understanding of our past for years to come. Support the Pennsylvania Mills Preservation Society today – because preserving our past is a powerful way to shape our future.
